The Road from Coorain

I have been reading "the road from Coorain" and in the first few chapters, Conway describes her life in the australian bush. what I did not understand was: How is the bush environment a defining factor for its population?

Are you referring to the settlers or the Aborigines?

I think she is talking about the settlers like the Ker Conway family
