Not giving a name to the man or the boy provides an anonymity that tells the reader that this situation could be happening in any place with anyone. Cormac McCarthy gives us a very generic sense of place to wave is characters into. These characters, the man and boy, have the best of traits in humanity living in the sickness of a man made (we think) apocalypse.
