Why does the man choose to live while the mother does not?

Mother knows the world is dead and that whatever is left alive holds more horror than can be imagined. Death is the only salvation in a doomed world. Father cannot bear to see his only treasure simply killed. In his boy, the father sees God: "If he is not the word of God, God never spoke." Father simply cannot bear to see the only light left in the world extinguished.
