what should The Man have noticed that would have saved them from this experience? List at least three details he missed as they entered the house, and that he notices AFTER.

I think you are referring to the people in the cellar. I don't think even the father could have envisioned such a horrible sight. Perhaps there are clues in the house but I don't like reading over that section: it's disturbing.
