A tie to the land is illustrated in many of the practices that take place in The River Between. One such instance is when Waiyaki is taken by his father to the site of the Mugumo tree and speaks to him about who he will be. There is the ritual and cultural practice of circumcision which he endures and the blood that mingels with the earth is symbolic. "Blood trickled freely on to the ground, sinking into the soil. Henceforth a religious bond linked Waiyaki to the earth..." (p.53).
