Personal Responsibility is a recurring idea. From childhood, Roosevelt, at the urging of his father, takes control of his life, beginning with his health. Disregarding the advice of doctors, he engages in a life of rigorous exercise. Though his efforts pay off, both short term in strength and long term in longevity and overall health, he decides to forgo such a schedule for his own son. He sees the risk of loss as too great.
