Brown and many of the Chicanos felt frustrated at the system and felt discriminated against. They lived in the slums of East Los Angeles where many of the buildings were infested with cockroaches, and where educational and job opportunities were bleak. The slums become a metaphor for the futility of the immigrant experience.
