Extraordinary skills is another theme. Despite being largely illiterate, Arnaud du Tilh is able to recall a huge amount of details about the life of Martin Guerre. He is accosted near Martin's village by two men, it seems, and greeted as Martin Guerre. Therefore, he knows that he looks like Martin, but he still has to learn to act like Martin. With stealth, he must learn and remember a huge amount of the details of Martin's life. He learns about Martin's house and possessions, and what are the names of all Martin's relatives, including Martin's wife Bertrande. Due to Arnaud's youth as a rascal, he is not afraid of a new woman.
