In THE QUIET GAME, lost love is central to the novel. Penn Cage returns to Natchez after the death of his wife to help him and his young daughter recover from the loss. Sarah Cage's death devastated Annie as well as Penn, and though he tried to carry on with life, Annie needs more than Penn is able to give her. Sarah had been the center of their lives, and the cancer that killed her slowly had taken her from them long before her death.
