Hussein's aim was to dominate the Arab world and his invasion of Kuwait was an attempt to use oil as a weapon. Some believed that Hussein's actions were an attempt to get other countries to abide by the oil quotas, which would increase profits and help Iraq with its debt. Hussein, however, wanted Kuwait and its resources for his own. The international community opposed his aggression and Hussein was defeated in the First Gulf War.
