What were some of the challenges of harvesting oil in Alaska? How did the oil companies address some of the issues?

One of the challenges was that existing technology didn't translate well to the climatic conditions in the Arctic. Another challenge was that oil companies faced dealing with how to transport oil from such distant locations. A pipeline was envisioned to help the transportation issue. Although it ran into problems,work eventually began.
