How did WWI affect the oil industry and consumption of oil?

During WWI, oil became a precious commodity. Britain nationalized BP for security reasons and many of the new war machinery, such as tanks, used oil in some form or another. Britain also sought to protect oil fields in important areas. German U-boats led to gas rationing in England and imported gas from the United States.
