Shirley Thermopolis, also called mamaw, is Mia's grandmother on her mother's side. Mia's mother and her parents were estranged until they were invited to New York for the wedding that Grandmere has planned. Mamaw is upset that she is being sent to stay in a hotel until she learns that the hotel will be paid for by Mia's father.
