In Chapter Six, Tom's mention of Luke foreshadows the ultimate piece to the puzzle of his inadequacies and Savannah's psychosis. In contrast, the grandmother's worldliness and the grandfather's religious fanaticism provide the reader with a clue to the disruptive elements that produced their dysfunctional family.
