Father Andrew, a priest, lives in the large, poorly maintained building at Offal Court. He teaches Tom to read and write, and even teaches him a bit of Latin. When Tom and Edward's identities become confused, Father Andrew tries to prevent John Canty from abusing Edward, who everyone thinks is Tom. As a result, John Canty hits the priest on the head with a cudgeland and kills him. John is forced into hiding.
