Redemption is a main theme in the book. Throughout the story the priest is looking for redemption for his sins. Perhaps because he is constantly so close to death his mind is never far from his sins. He knows he is a sinner and is not afraid to admit it to anyone. As he hears the confessions of others he is constantly reminded that he himself cannot officially confess to a priest. Perhaps because he cannot talk to another priest he often confesses his sins to other people he meets.
