In the poem, Riders, Frost uses the metaphor of horseback riding for living on earth and guiding the progress of man. He says that birth is like mounting a horse bare-backed, and that the horse on which humanity is riding is headless and running wildly. The note of optimism is that humanity still has ideas we haven's tried.
