Poe uses powerful and dark imagery in the Pit and the Pendulum, which can be seen throughout the work. First, there is the huge pendulum, whose downward movement brings with it a rendevous with death....much like the condition of every human being. Secondly, is the image of 'the pit' which is a physical representation of the ultimate darkness and evil, or hell.
