What is the author's purpose for writing "The Picture of Dorian Gray"?

Partially it is to inform the reader about one's own penchant for self destruction, but also to entertain. He wanted to explore the idea of duplicity in the ways people portray themselves, and of course how vanity (ego) can lead to ruin.
