This musical monkey is a symbol of the past and memories of the past. When Christine hears the tune this monkey played, she remembered the time she had spent with Erik in the Paris Opera House. Erik also identifies himself with the use of the music box. When Christine hears the tune and then sees the monkey, she knows that it was Erik who lured her to New York.
