The theme in The People of Sparks surrounds first impressions. We see that almost immediately when the Emberites reach the village of Sparks. For many characters their first impressions turn out to be wrong, whereas if they had refrained from making a quick judgement, things would have gone easier for them. This is especially illustrated in the character named Tick. Doon likes Tick at first, but later he turns out to be a very vain and cruel individual.
