The conflict between Kino and himself (man vs himself) is the greatest conflict. He is swayed by the possession of the pearl and dreams of what it can afford him and tossing it back into the ocean because it has actually brought him nothing more than trouble. There are external conflicts involved (Kino vs the doctor or Kino vs the trackers) but the main conflict lies within Kino's heart.
