The imagery of the animals underscores the struggle for the survival just as the family struggles in nature and the world of men.

The roosters fight each other, like Kino’s family has to fight against the elements.

The ants foreshadow being trapped. The first time they appear in chapter one, Kino watches as an ant is entrapped in an ant lion's trap. Kino too will fear being trapped by more powerful people.
