The Pearl portrays two separate forces that serve to shape mold life and determine the destiny of individuals. In The Pearl, Steinbeck depicts fate as being most effected by humans themselves... people shaping their own destinies. In contrast, he also illustrates fate as something beyond our control.... the scorpion sting, the doctor's refusal, Coyotito's death. Good luck.... bad luck.... accidents.... evil.... they all sit far beyond the control of humanity, leaving us to ponder if our own deeds are meaningless.
