Kino is a victim of circumstance..... or cause and effect, depending upon how you look at it. He is poor, but he is also happy and content with his small family. When Coyotito is stung, he is unable to find medical help because he has nothing with which to pay.

Kino believes the pearl will change his life. He doesn't see the cheating, the greed, and the danger that will follow his family in order to achieve the dream of collecting on the pearl's value. He doesn't count on the cost to his family, losing the irreplaceable.... his son.
