Orestes is Agamemnon and Clytemnestra's son. He is the main character in the second and third plays of the trilogy. Orestes was taken into exile to protect him from his vengeful mother, who was driven mad with grief and rage over her daughter's murder. He later returns to Mycenae and is determined to take revenge for Agamemnon's murder, having been ordered to do so by the god Apollo. Orestes' murder of Clytemnestra, however, is held to be a more heinous crime against nature than Clytemnestra's killing of his father. As a result, Orestes is driven to near madness by the Eumenides. Orestes later seeks refuge in the temple of Athena, where he pleads for, and receives justice.
