Recurring ideas are populations and demographics. Depression afflicts people of both sexes and all ages and backgrounds. In this way, it is an equalizer. Solomon discusses the fact that women have a much stronger tendency to develop depression than men, for reasons that are attributed to physical as well as social differences. Theories on the subject vary widely. Men, on the other hand, although they report depression much less often than women, are much more likely to commit suicide. Men who suffer from depression sometimes show symptoms that are not generally seen as characteristic of depression, such as violence.
