The author uses foreshadowing early in the novel to illustrate the conflict between Ruben and Netanyahu. From the start, the Netanyahus enter Ruben's life in a way that does not meet his expectations.

"I stepped outside just in time to catch the car’s rear door opening and bodies pratfalling out—not clowns in full bozo regalia honking horns and juggling plates, but close enough”
