Mathilde is rather immature at the beginning of the story. She longs for the illusion of happiness that she thinks being ultra-wealthy will bring her. Over the next ten years, Madame Loisel learns what it really means to be poor, to have to work long hours just to get by, and she changes drastically...... both mentally and physically.
