''The Necklace'' takes place in Paris, France, at the close of the 19th century. I think the setting represents the stark divide between rich and poor. During the ten-year struggle, the protagonist loses her beauty and pride. The protagonist longs to move from low middle class to rich class. Because of her illusions of grandeur, she is cast into poverty.
