The author uses juxtaposition throughout the novel, comparing and contrasting a number of characters and situations. These include the comparison between Frankie's real life and the lives of the naked mole-rats in the National Zoo, and the similarities between what is happening to Frankie at school and the messages between Frankie and Ayanna.
