The novel is set in Europe in the late sixteenth century. It is a continent that consists of many countries. About half of this novel occurs in France while the other half occurs in Italy, and one of the most important distinctions in the novel is the fact that the French characters are seen primarily as the protagonists, whereas the Italian characters are the villains.
