Why does Murks carry a gun in the novel, The Music of Chance?

Murks begins to carry a gun at work to keep Jack and Nashe in line. It is a method of intimidation, and Murks is prepared to use the weapon if Nashe and Jack try to physically fight back against their circumstances.
