One example of symbolism can be seen in the author's use of eyes to symbolize the inner worlds of the characters. Because Simonopio chooses not to speak, he communicates mostly with his eyes. Nana Reja also uses her eyes as a form of communication. In this way, their emotions are expressed through their expressions achieved with eye contact, connecting to the inner worlds of the other characters. Lupita’s eyes reveal her inner desires by following the object of her affections, Martín. By stealing her eyes from her face, Espiricueta makes the statement that he wishes to have total control over Lupita’s inner world. He takes away her ability to express herself. The fact that Espiricueta is the only character unwilling to make eye contact with others reveals his suspicious nature.
