August and Chad are the Protagonist and Antagonist of the play. August is older, more educated and esteemed whereas Chad is uneducated. Chad resents August and the archeologists, but looks forward to his legacy of riches once the highway is built. August looks forward to his own, following the discovery of the God-king.
