How does Rainsford meet General Zaroff on the island?

Rainsford falls from the ship he's traveling aboard when he hears gunshots. By following the sounds he is able to swim to the island, where he eventually comes across Zaroff's home. When he arrives, Rainsford is taken off guard because it almost seems as if Zaroff were waiting for him.
