Ettlinger grew up in the German town of Karlsruhe, Germany among a rich family history. When Ettlinger was still a young child, the laws in Germany began to change, causing hardship for his family as they lost business at their clothing store because they were Jews. Ettlinger’s family would eventually immigrate to America, leaving just a short time before the famous Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.
