What character acts as a foil to Dr. Kearns in the novel, The Monstrumologist?

In the novel's conclusion, Malachi sacrifices himself, allowing the Anthropophagi alpha female to eat him as he holds a grenade, in the hopes that the blast will kill her. Malachi is a brave young man in the novel, who portrays a counter character to the cruel and dangerous Dr. Kearns.
