How does Bishop Love change over the course of the novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang?

Love has high political aspirations, and he believes that the single handed capture of the Monkey Wrench gang would result in a higher chance of becoming governor. When Love has a heart attack in the desert, however, he is hunting Smith and his friends, and it is Doc who saves his life. As a result, Love is a changed man who speaks on behalf of the foursome at the trial, and eventually is the priest who marries Doc and Abbzug.
