Helen's disabilities and behavior affected the Keller family by putting the house in utter disarray and making the familiy quite disagreeable with each other. Captain Keller was always fighting with his son James and overpowered his wife Katie in most decisions concerning the family. Everyone was under a great deal of stress and they took it out on each other. James was estranged from his father and did not have a close relationship with his stepmother, Kate. He was always getting yelled at and critisized by his father. Kate was very anxious and felt helpless in how to best treat Helen. She gave Helen anything she wanted, whenever she wanted it, spoiling her.
