The Socialist is a newspaper founded by Singh and Browne in order to gain support for their political ideas and ambitions. Singh and Browne were eventually able to parley the support they gained from followers of The Socialist into the attainment of political offices and influence. The Socialist promotes ideas of separatism and independence from Britain, and these ideas gain widespread support. However, the ideas and political successes born out of The Socialist also appear to change Singh and Browne, as Singh begins to identify with Isabella more than with Britain, and Browne begins to lose sight of his own values due to his political ambitions.
