Ursa's life before she left Berge was a generally well-to-do, cosmopolitan life, with servants, rich foods, and nice clothes, though her family wealth diminished following her mother's death. Bergen is where Cornet comes to find a wife, and marries Ursa there. Bergen serves as a major contrast to Vardø, and though Ursa finds some common ground with the villagers with some Norwegian customs and superstitions, her life in Bergen is almost totally alien to Vardø.
