Vardøhaus, the large castle and fortress at the outskirts of Vardø, is where Lensmann Cunningham, his wife, and their servants move in when they arrive in Vardø. It also houses a jail, where many Sámi and eventually accused witches in Vardø are imprisoned and tried for witchcraft. While an impressive and imposing fortress, Ursa quickly comes to see the entire place as a prison, swallowing people spreading terror.
