Christin Cunningham, the wife of the Lensmann, serves as a symbol of the ideal wife of a government official.... qualities that Ursa is unable or unwilling to uphold. Christin supports her husband unconditionally and turns a blind eye to his moral failings and deficiencies as a husband. Ursa, however, is unable to do so with Absalom. She is disgusted by her husband's activities and refused to accept his flaws as a husband, especially his physical and sexual abuse. And yet, rather than envy Christin for 'succeeding' as a wife in this regard, Ursa simply feels pity for her.
