it refrs to susan. she ws a simpl woman, ready to lie fr makin oders happy, yet awre that lying is nt right. thus, she ws both honest and dishonest. this characteristc of hers is show when she lies abt elizabeth jane's parentage to henchard, as long as she ws living. she ws dishonst. but on her death, she finally confesses EJ ws actually newson's daughtr, thus being honst.
