How does the author use foreshadowing in The Mayor of Casterbridge?

In Chapter One, we come to learn that drinking alcohol serves two purposes..... one, Michael speaks truthfully when drunk, and two, he turns into an absolute beast. These two purposes foreshadow Michael's resolution to give up drinking altogether.
