Why does Mrs. Levi plan to thwart Mr. Vandergelder's plans to marry the milliner in the play, The Matchmaker?

Although Mrs. Levi is not in love with Mr. Vandergelder, she wants his money because she feels she could do some good with it. So, she plans to prevent Mr. Vandergelder's proposal to the milliner and marry him herself.
