What type of personality does Lantier have in the novel, The Masterpiece?

Lantier is an excellent example of a bipolar personality. He is basically a kind man but frequently abusive toward Christine and totally indifferent to his son. His friends and the older artist Bongrand recognize his genius but his tragic flaw is that he can never satisfy himself.
