Christine represents the innocence of youth and the Provinçal attitude of what is acceptable in art. Zola uses a powerful metaphor in Christine's reaction to Claude's violence of the coloring that slashes through the shadows. The conflict within Christine is one of attraction to the artist but revulsion toward his art.
