How does Emile Zola use imagery in The Masterpiece?

In Chapter Twelve, Zola uses verbal imagery to illustrate the confrontation between Claude and Christine, in addition to the dark studio lit only by candlelight..... which creates a mood of gloom and foreshadows the end of their relationship.
